Although there have been many discussions of the need for and development of biodegradable surfactants, ranging from oversimplified news accounts to the highly detailed technical paper, it is felt that there is a need to deal with the nature of pollution itself and the relationship of surfactants to the nation's overall waste disposal system. Accordingly, we shall look quickly at the nature of wastes, waste disposal, types of pollution, and the nature of surfactant pollution. Then we shall progress to the subject of biodegradability - what it is, how it is measured - and finally examine the qualifications of commercially available types of biodegradable surfactants. |
