Modified electrodes were characterized by cyclic voltammetry, attenuated total reflectance–Fourier transform IR spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray analysis, atomic force microscopy, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Nyquist and Bode plots for magnitude, phase, admittance, and capacitance on both polymer-modified electrodes were comparatively investigated in detail. The highest low-frequency capacitance (C LF) and double-layer capacitance (C dl) were obtained in 0.1 M LiClO4/CH3CN for poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) and poly(octylthiophene)/GCE. EIS data were fitted to the equivalent circuit model of R(Q(R(C(R(C(RW))))))(CR), which is used to investigate circuit parameters. Vibrations (mécanique)Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : We have recently developed a novel spray-coating method, called the “substrate vibration-assisted spray coating” (SVASC) (Zabihi and Eslamian in J Coat Technol Res 12:711–719, 2015), in which ultrasonic vibration is imposed on the substrate to improve the spray-on film and coating characteristics. In that work, the SVASC method was introduced, and its effectiveness on the uniformity and electrical conductivity of PEDOT:PSS films, used in emerging solar cells, was demonstrated. The present work reports unprecedented results on the effect of the ultrasonic vibration power on wetting/dewetting of PEDOT:PSS films. It is observed that, while the application of a low-power ultrasonic vibration (LPUV) improves the surface wetting and film coverage through improving droplet spreading and coalescence and repairing of the dewetted areas, a high-power ultrasonic vibration (HPUV) promotes dewetting, resulting in less coverage and the formation of a nonuniform film. The improved wetting due to the application of the LPUV has opened a window of opportunity for the fabrication of intact thin films and related thin film devices. On the other hand, the controlled dewetting process due to the application of the HPUV may have novel applications in template fabrication and self-assembly in nanotechnology. Here, we also study the effects of the application of multipass spraying compared with single-pass spraying strategy, and the application of using two co-solvents on PEDOT:PSS film characteristics. The results confirm that the utilization of isopropyl alcohol (IPA) as a co-solvent added to the PEDOT:PSS precursor solution improves the surface wettability and film coverage, compared to the films made using demethylformamide (DMF), as the co-solvent. Vibrations (mécanique)Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Spray coating is a commercial and low-cost technique for the fabrication of large-area coatings and thin films, but it is a stochastic process that is hard to control, as far as the fabrication of thin coatings and solid films is concerned. On the other hand, drop-casting is a facile and more controllable coating technique than spray coating, but its application is limited to small-area thin solid films and coatings. The objective of this work is, therefore, to study the feasibility of impinging an array of droplets, rather than just one droplet, to fabricate polymeric and other solution-processed thin films with larger surface areas than those produced by conventional drop-casting. To this end, in this study, four droplets of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)–polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) solution are released simultaneously and impinged on the four vertices of a square on a wettable solid surface to make a thin film. The effect of the substrate texture on the spreading and the film formation process is studied. As a novel idea, the substrate is excited by ultrasonic vibration to improve the droplet spreading and coalescence. It is shown that as time elapses, the impinged droplets successfully coalesce and make a thin film. Surface morphology and roughness of the resulting PEDOT:PSS thin solid films show that, except on the edges, the resulting thin solid films are uniform. This leads us to conclude that the application of equal-sized and equally-spaced multiple droplets released simultaneously and impinged on vibrating substrates could be considered as a new coating technique, which has some of the benefits of the spray coating, but it is much more controllable than spray coating. Poly(3,4-éthylènedioxythiophène)
Revêtements organiquesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) was electrosynthesized on nickel electrodes from aqueous micellar solutions of sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate (SDBS) containing sodium saccharin or sodium perchlorate as supporting electrolytes. The choice of the aqueous medium for the preparation of PEDOT is mainly dictated by its relevant interest on the economic and ecological fronts. The electrodeposition of the organic coating was achieved using cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry and chronopotentiometry. This latter electrochemical method proved to be the most suited to the preparation of homogeneous and adherent PEDOT films. Elsewhere, the presence of SDBS micelles in the electrolytic medium led to an improvement of the monomer solubility and a notable decrease in its oxidation potential. Furthermore, spectroscopic and microscopic characterization techniques revealed regular and compact nodule-like structure of the coating and proved the increase in its doping rate when increasing the electrosynthesis current density. On the other hand, in order to discuss the potential application of the prepared conducting polymer as protective layer against corrosion, several electrochemical tests were performed, using open circuit potential (OCP) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) methods. OCP curves have shown a slight increase in the potential toward more positive values, while the EIS measurements have given a 90° capacitive line indicating the pure capacitive behavior of the polymeric system and have proven the presence of a fast charge transfer at the metal/polymer and polymer/solution interfaces. Poly(3,4-éthylènedioxythiophène)Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) coatings have been electrochemically prepared on stainless steel (SS) in acetonitrile and aqueous media, respectively, by the cyclic voltammetry technique. The corrosion behavior of the coated SS was evaluated in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution using anodic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, which demonstrate that the polymer coatings are able to mitigate the corrosion of the SS substrate in chloride solution. PEDOT works as the electron exchange medium to passivate the SS underneath and reduce the oxygen on the surface. By comparing the performances, it was clear that PEDOT electrodeposited from an aqueous solution can afford better corrosion inhibition capability.
