Substantial effort is expended on producing powders with the flowability required for target applications. Caking, the process by which powders gain strength during uninterrupted storage, compromises these efforts, impacting powder processing and use. Caked pigments may be difficult to disperse, demanding more energy intensive mixing, for instance, while clumped powder coatings can exhibit poor fluidisation and flow behaviour, and erratic performance. Studies of caking behaviour provide a secure foundation for combatting it, to preserve the value added through particle engineering and the use of flow additives.
This article examines how powder testing with a powder rheometer (FT4 Powder Rheometer®, Freeman Technology, Tewkesbury, UK) can provide unique insight into caking behaviour, notably crusting. Experimental data demonstrate the benefits of these capabilities when developing optimal storage and handling protocols for specific powders.Note de contenu : - Understanding caking and its impact
