We caught up with Kim Sena, Sustainability Manager at JBS Couros, who was instrumental in the development of Kind Leather, to discuss the importance of LCAs as a vital tool for process improvement. Note de contenu : - It is just over two years ago that JBS launched its Kind Leather concept. Can you explain what Kind Leather is, the key environmental benefits of this approach and how it differs from conventionally made leather ?
- There are tools that aim to evaluate the environmental impact of leather throughout its lifecycle, but JBS developed its own LCA (lifecycle assessment) to measure the impact of Kind Leather. Can you give more details ?
- Kind Leather has recently been added to the Higg Materials Sustainability Index (Higg MSI), run by the Sustainable Apparel Coalition (SAC). Can you share some of those results? Why did JBS decide to follow this path with its LCA ?
- The Higg Index, however, has been viewed as quite controversial and many inside and outside of the leather industry feel that it unfairly scores leather and other natural materials compared to fossil-fuel derived alternatives. What is your view on this ?
- Would you say that LCAs are a useful tool for greater transparency in the leather supply chain and to help change the narrative and negativity around leather ?
- Leather from Brazil is sometimes seen by brands and other industry stakeholders as problematic due to links to deforestation. What is JBS doing to combat this issue ?
- So, with all of the above said, do you feel quite optimistic about the future of leather ?En ligne : https://drive.google.com/file/d/1yAlBOpdpZGAAdv4wPIBXpjl2EjErHpVB/view?usp=drive [...] Format de la ressource électronique : Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=36414
