The impact of Baeyer's research on the development of organic chemistry towards the end of the 19th century cannot be overestimated. In fact, much of his work in a variety of areas laid the foundation of modem organic chemistry. The sheer volume and scope of his contribution are overwhelming. An inspiring and charismatic teacher, he trained several students who went on to become skilled chemists. Baeyer's work stimulated the development of the German chemical industry and even influenced the economic fortunes of several nations.
