These can be both thermoplastics as well as thermosets. Because of their inherent nature, diversity, varied chemical composition and physical properties, coatings for plastics offer a unique challenge.
The plastics are painted either to enhance their functional properties or to provide decorative effects. Functionally they are coated to improve weatherability, abrasion and chemical resistance and to preserve their mechanical properties. These highly sophisticated elements solve our innumerable problems in the field of information and communication, data storage, construction, medical services etc. But these microcomponents face severe adverse conditions like vibrations, high temperature, salt spray, humidity, chemicals and moisture. These conditions can cause corrosion, mold growth, current leakage resulting in failure of the equipment. In these adverse situations organic coatings play a major role in protecting these equipments. These coatings act as electrical insulator, electromagnetic shield and provide mechanical protection. They allow higher power, closer track spacing to prevent current leakage. Many coatings are used for decorative purposes also - for example on the exterior of consumer and professional equipments. Both transparent and pigmented coatings improve appearance of equipments but the latter ensures higher degree of secrecy by camouflaging the components and layout. The word alkyd was originally coined by Kienle from the component monomers - alcohol and acid and in the broad sense refers to a polyester. The term alkyd is often used in a restrictive manner to describe a fatty acid modified polyester. This differentiation between alkyds and unsaturated polyester can be justified on chemical grounds since the film forming reactions are distincly different.
Ever since alkyd resins were first introduced some 35 years ago, today alkyds outrank all other synthetic coating resins used by the paint industry. The alkyd reaction is considered to be most versatile resin forming reaction known. No other resin lends itself to greater internal variation or to more useful modification by physical or chemical blending with other polymers. Benchmarking of DriLith W2 inks has been carried out with both medium and high-end waterless printers using different presses and stocks. It wasfound that DriLith W2 inks print with general performance characteristics (toning, set off and gloss), dot gain and trap values similar to those of solvent-based inks. Their low tack and soft body permit easier handling and use with a variety of uncoated and coated stock. In addition, less paper waste at start up, less piling and pulling were also observed during runs.
