In this paper PUR ionomers are prepared by anionic dispersion process, using isophoron diisocynate (IPDI), polyester polyol, polyoxypropylene glycol (PPG-1000) and dimethylolpropionic acid (DMPA) as the potential ionic center with NMP as the co-solvent. A series of dispersions having different amounts of DMPA have been worked out to find the effect of DMPA on dispersion properties. By using a combination of thermal and thermomechanical analytical methods, the authors found out which binder combinations in basecoats can lead to the best chip resistance. The paints can be evaluated independently of the way in which special adhesion tests are carried out or various coating compositions are prepared.
