Résumé : |
This paper deals with upgrading of low-grade grain leathers by an innovative finishing technology known as WATER-BORNE TRANSFER COATING SYSTEM. The finishing chemicals used in this work are ecologically acceptable because of their very low solvent content. Aliphatic polyurethane dispersions were used in this finishing method to provide excellent physical properties to the finished leathers for making high value leather products. This paper describes crusting of low-grade wet blue cow sides using a proper retanning and fatliquoring system to make the crust with slight stretch and without any unbound or oxidisable fat (which will inhibit the adhesion of the finish film). The crust was finished by transfer coating using release paper, wherein the finished film was cast on release paper and subsequently it was transferred on to the crust leather. The film was developed in three stages using polyurethane dispersions, defoaming agent, leveling agent, thickening agent, crosslinker and adhesive. The physical and chemical properties of the upgraded leathers were evaluated and the results obtained were discussed. |
