Titre : A guide to gloss Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Jason Loehr, Auteur Année de publication : 2020 Article en page(s) : p. 32-33 Langues : Anglais (eng) Catégories : Brillance (optique) Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The author discusses how to choose the right colour management technology if accounting for gloss is critical to your business.
There are many physical factors that influence the way we see the colour of objects, one of which is gloss. When light strikes an object, most of the light enters the object, except for a small amount that is reflected off the object's surface. This reflected light is responsible for the shiny or bright appearance of an object, otherwise known as gloss. Whether or not an object will have a glossy or a matte appearance correlates for the way light is reflected to our eyes. Specular reflection, or a glossy appearance, occurs when there is a mirror-like reflection of light off a smooth surface. When looking at a rougher, more irregular surface, the specular reflection becomes diffuse. This diffuse reflection (or matte appearance) occurs when the light is reflected back at many angles, rather than one mirror-like angle.Note de contenu : - Why gloss compensation matters to your business and how it works

It's widely recognised that visual colour evaluation can be imprecise. Even under the same lighting conditions, two individuels can still see and describe colour differently due to a variety of physical factors. In order to overcome this, the industry looks to spectrophotometers and specialised software that can accurately match, correct and control colour.
Of note, samples with differing gloss levels can present unique challenges for both visual assessment and digital colour management.Note de contenu : - What makes gloss and colour measurement so challenging ?
