For customs officers at the point of export, import and re-export, who do not necessarily have the skilled scientific knowledge needed for fine forensic identification, it should at least allow preliminary determinations to be made, based on key characters described and illustrated in the book. Skins at least should be easily identifiable to species.
Karlheinz Fuchs is truly a remarkable person who has gained a worldwide reputation within both the scientific and industrial communities. His scientific research on taxonomy and his research into tanning chemistry and technologies are both areas where he has achieved international leadership. He has channelled his professional activities with both passion and enthusiasm for more than four decades, often in an honorary capacity. This has provided the trade with high-quality biological resources for the reptile skin industry, whilst directing the same passion to the conservation of crocodilians and other herpetofauna in both developed and developing nations around the world.
As a Iongstanding member of the Crocodile Specialist Group of die Species Survival Commission (SSC), of the IUCN-World Conservation Union, he has always committed himself to the principle of sustainable use. He has often used his charming and cosmopolitan manner to influence authorities in many countries — to prioritise the conservation of threatened species as a critical first step towards achieving sustainable use.
As Chairman of the IUCN-SSC Crocodile Specialist Group I am simply delighted that an updated English version of 'Die Krokodilhaut' is now available. I know it will become a standard text for those with an interest in taxonomy, anatomy and enforcement. h will assist in the ongoing implementation of CITES, and as such, will contribute in a real way to die ongoing conservation of die world's crocodilians and to die principles of sustainable use that will ultimately underlie the ability of people to have both abundant wild crocodile populations and the products made from crocodilians.Note de contenu : - 1.
