A widely used technique for assuring paint adhesion to TPO is the use of adhesion promoter primers based on chlorinated polypropylenes (CPO). Much research has been focused on understanding the forces involved at the interfaces of substrate, adhesion promoter, and topcoats resulting in the adhesion or the loss of adhesion in various environmental conditions. This study correlates the adhesion performance of CPO and nonchlorinated adhesion promoters (NCPO) as measured by peel strength with properties observed through microscopy techniques. Adhesion performance of CPOs, NCPOs, and blends are quantified through the use of 90° and 180° peel strength studies. Surface characteristics of adhesion promoters applied over a TPO substrate and cured at various temperatures are examined through the use of atomic force microscopy (AFM). To clarify the effects that govern the gloss reduction, the correlation of coatings performace dat with Atomic Force Microscopy results can be extremely helpful. However, detailed structure-property analyses of blends of polyester-β-hydroxyalkylamide systems based on different, incompatible resins reveal, that the difference in acid value between the two resins in the blends can serve as a very reliable gloss determinating property. Furthermore, the performance and application attributes for a refinish basecoat formulation are slightly different from those of an OEM basecoat. The absence of a high temperature baking step during the refinish process necessitates that the paint exhibit very good antisag behavior as well as quick 'dry to touch' without compromising the flow and leveling properties of the coating as it dries. As most paint formulations are multicomponent in nature, it is always a challenge to precisely measure the impact of specific formulation components on the collective performance attributes of the applied coating. In this work, the focus has been to develop novel techniques that can be used to demonstrate a more quantitative measure of some of the performance attributes that rheological additives like cellulose esters can provide to automotive coatings. A series of pigmented basecoat formulations were prepared which contained cellulose acetate butyrates (CABs) of varying molecular weights at different levels based on the total solids of the coating formulation. The nonvolatile content of the formulations was also varied. The viscoelastic behavior of a typical automotive basecoat formulation during the drying process was then investigated using a novel rheological technique. Complex viscosity data (including storage and loss moduli as well as tan delta) were determined as a function of drying time and then compared to the macroscopic properties typically associated with a coating film as it dries. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) was also used to correlate the rheology of the metallic basecoat formulations with drying behavior of the coating. The final appearance of the coating was investigated by several microscopic techniques such as Laser Scanning Confocal Microscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy, Atomic Force Microscopy, and Surface Profilometery, and attempts were made to correlate bulk measurements like 'flop index' with the microstructure of the coating. Température de transitionIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Transition temperature microscopy (TTM) is a novel local thermal analysis technique that maps spatial variations in thermal properties on length scales from millimeters to nanometers. Traditional bulk thermal analysis provides a sample averaged result and cannot generally supply sufficient information about complex structures or heterogeneities within films or coatings. There currently exists a nanoscale thermal analysis (nano-TA) technique in which a nanoscale thermal probe heats a localized region on the sample surface to measure its thermal properties, including thermal transition temperatures like crystalline melting points and glass transitions. TTM enables these nano-TA measurements to be carried out rapidly at a succession of points, thus creating automated high-resolution spatial maps of the thermal properties of a sample. In this article we also demonstrate how TTM can be used to characterize chemical and structural heterogeneities and thereby generate vital information in applications ranging from coating defects, to in-situ property measurement of individual layers in multilayered films, to the detection of gradients and interfaces.
