Tannage Résumé : Most tanneries that I have visited over the years have one thing in common. All the safety hardware is in place such as the machine guards, separate routes for pedistrans and workplace transport, computer controls, signage, etc., but the majority fall down on the software - the managment of health and safety. Take, for example, the case of a tannery using solvents where smoking was prohibited and where the supervisor was seen lighting up a cigarette directly under a No Smocking sign. What message does this give the workforce? Health and safety doesn't matter! This type of attitude is seen all over the globe to a lesser greater extent. Also heard regulary is the statement that "We don't have accidents" or "We haven't had an accident in years". But what is an accident? An accident may be defined as : An unplanned, uncontrolled event or exposure that has led to, or has the potential for, injury, damage or some other loss. This includes not only injuries, but incidents where damage occurs and those where there is no actual harm done, but where there could be in future. This latter is called a near miss and is good indicator of a forthcoming event.
