The proposed method uses multivariate calibration with partial least-squares regression (PLSR) of diffuse reflectance spectra (NIRRS) for leather specimens. The reference values of the calibration matrix are used to derive those for powdered leather extracted with methylene chloride using the official method. Two different approaches based on matrices containing spectral information for powdered leather and spectra directly recorded on unpowdered leather samples were developed.
The optimum calibration model for powdered samples is based on the second spectral derivative and 3 PLS components, and provides overall relative calibration and prediction errors in the region of 5%. On the other hand, the optimum prediction model uses the first spectral derivative and 5 PLS components; the results are similarly as good as those of the calibration model, but the prediction of some external samples results in larger errors arising from the inability to construct calibration sets encompassing the whole variability of the prediction set.
Fibre optic-based NIR spectroscopy in combination with multivariate calibration appears to be an effective alternative to existing methods for the analysis and control of fat in the leather tanning industry as it is a rapid method and uses no reagents.Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES : Leather and fat-liquoring - Samples - Apparatus and software - Recording of NIR spectra - Processing of data

Spectroscopie de réflectanceIndex. décimale : 667.3 Teinture et impression des tissus Résumé : Constant improvements in digital cameras have made it possible to use these devices for colour acquisition and reproduction at an advanced level. It is known that a colour match for all observers when changing illumination can only be achieved by matching spectral data. Obtaining spectral data from digital camera RGB values could provide a new way of using the digital camera as a spectrophotometric tool or as a high-quality colour-capturing system that is required in more demanding applications. In the present study, two spectral reflectance estimation methods were examined – the Imai–Berns method (ImaiBerns) and the spectral-sensitivity-based method (SpecSens). The purpose of the research was to simplify the procedure of the SpecSens method by using a diffraction grating and a spectroradiometer instead of a monochromator, and to compare the results with those of the ImaiBerns approach. Obtained spectral reflectance estimates were evaluated using the root-mean-square error and ?E00 metrics. Results of the research show that the ImaiBerns method was superior to SpecSens, most likely because the former method does not require knowledge of the camera spectral sensitivities, which often introduces errors into reflectance estimation calculations. Both methods were successful in predicting black, brownish, and dark patches, as indicated by a low root-mean-square error, as well as unsaturated pastel, pink, or skin colours, which produced low ?E00 values. On the other hand, many of the patches with a low root-mean-square error also exhibited high ?E00 values, while bright, nearly-white patches were characterised by a high root-mean-square error. Spectroscopie de réflectanceIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy is well established as an analytical tool, for the determination of different functional moieties in complex matrices, including polymers and resins, both natural and synthetic. In addition to conventional KBr sampling techniques, DRIFT (Diffuse Reflectance), ATR (Attenuated Total Reflectance) and Specular Reflectance (SRS) techniques are also associated with FTIR. Specular Reflectance spectroscopy is useful in compounds having amorphous structures, as well as substances, which cannot be ground to a fine powder for KBr sampling. Such materials are therefore cast as films on reflecting surfaces and the reflectance spectra of the films are obtained, which may have to be converted to easily recognizable, transmission-type spectra, through sophisticated computerized techniques. In the present work, specular reflectance spectroscopy was utilized to ascertain molecular level differences in functional moieties of lac resin, obtained from different sources. Teinture -- Fibres textilesIndex. décimale : 667.3 Teinture et impression des tissus Résumé : The partitioning of colour differences into ΔL*, ΔC* and ΔH* is not directly equivalent to the dyer’s method of partitioning. The dyer’s method involves separation into the components of depth (ΔD), brightness (ΔB) and hue (ΔH), of which only hue difference has a qualitative (and quantitative) equivalent in the CIELAB system. Depth and brightness are important terms to dyers. Depth is related to the amount of dye taken up by a textile material and brightness to that component of colour difference that is neither depth nor hue. Brightness is best defined as the opposite of dullness, dullness being related to the amount of neutral grey present in the colour. An algorithm, called the Wardman–Smith–Farooq algorithm, has been developed to compute the dyers’ variables of ΔD,ΔB and ΔH from spectral reflectance values, enabling dyers to take full advantage of colorimetry. The algorithm is based on extensive experimental work to map surfaces of constant visual depth through the colour space and this paper describes the methodology of the calculation. The correlations of the values of ΔD,ΔB and ΔH, determined using the Wardman–Smith–Farooq algorithm with other empirical models for 117 sample pairs, are given. Such a prediction will be useful in the colour matching of leather – the time delay in drying of wet leather and determination of the final colour can be avoided. The use of computer technology interfaced with a reflectance spectrophotometer provides a novel approach to the prediction of dry colour from wet colour. In this study, five different regression models, i.e. linear fit, log fit, quadratic fit, log quadratic fit and cubic fit, were developed, with the dry reflectance of the leather sample as a dependent variable and the wet reflectance of the leather as an independent variable. The relationship between moisture content and surface leather colour, a prerequisite for enabling prediction, was studied. The obtained log quadratic model can be used for accurate prediction of dry colour from wet colour.
