To develop the most satisfactory concept on which ta base the requirements for materials to he used for garments or footwear, the following data about man (which can vary among the different races) must be known :
1. Heat emission of different areas of the skin and heat distribution in the body, and
2. Water vapor and sweat emission from different areas of the skin. Both these factors must he considered under various conditions of stress and strain (physical or mental exercise, expressed in watts or joules per hour) ; under different climatic conditions (temperature, humidity, air movement) ; and with a variety of types of clothing. For 14 combinations of these factors, the basic data were established in tests over several years with subjects wearing different clothing under various conditions. At the same time, the physical properties of the materials worn were measured by test instruments, in particular such properties as their behavior towards water, water vapor, and heat, and their drying time. |
