Résumé : |
In a European R&D project, leather institutes and tanneries from Austria, Germany and Italy have developed methods to apply sodium silicates as lime substitute in the unhairing process and to stabilize pelts for shaving without pre-tannage. In the project, it could be shown that lime in the unhairing process can be substituted by sodium silicate without problems. Moreover, the resulting pelts can be split with higher accuracy and show better cleanness than those from common procedures. It also could be shown that silicate - stabilized pelts can be shaved without pre-tannage. The resulting shavings are (nearly) native and can be utilized much easier than common pre-tanned shavings. In addition, the silicate - procedure leads to improved uptake of most of the subsequently applied auxiliaries. As a result, effluent loading is reduced and so also sludge volumes from effluent treatment decreases. By means of scanning electron microscope/microprobe analysis, the penetration and distribution of silicates and other auxiliaries were studied. |
