The ideal state of dispersion is usually when all particles are reduced to and remain as non-flocculated primary particles.
Polymer particles, pigments and fillers, not optimally dispersed can adversely affect the ability of the coating to provide adequate barrier (to electrolytes, water, gases, etc) properties. In addition, poorly dispersed pigments and fillers can affect the ability to add colourant as well as paint colour stability under the applied shear forces that can occur during application (eg brushing and spraying).Note de contenu : - More efficient interaction between pigment and latex polymers

The lowering of volatile organic compound (VOC) levels to below 100 g/L is being considered for industrial maintenance coatings in many regions of the U.S. This article discusses the development of materborne acrylic latex polymers for use in high performance, VOC-compliant coatings applied to steel and concrete structures. Formulation and coating properties of these polymers are described, with an emphasis on comparisons of performance to traditional, higher VOC waterborne and solventborne coatings. Latex particles containing a new proprietary acrylic monomer capable of superior binding too pigment surfaces show a significant increase in the dispersion of TiO2 particles throughout the dry film.
