Delamination and crack formation are examples of defect structures possibly due to them. The measurement of internal stresses in organic coatings is well-known. A cantilever method specially developed for this purpose was applied to characterize stresses in very thing (5µm) inorganic-organic hybrid coatings based on sol-gel chemistry. The application was performed by spraying and a primer was used. Hybrid coatings of different types were characterized with respect to the evolution of internal stresses due to film formation, to changes of temperature, and to changes of humidity and were compared to polyurethane coatings. A method based on thermal stress measurements was applied to determine the thermal expansion coefficient of this kind of hybrid coatings. Relevant existing strategies to accomplish self healing have been investigated : micro-encapsulation of healing agents, resins with high flow behaviour and other emergent techniques.
In this paper, self-healing using microencapsulation wil be discussed. Commercially available paints for corrosion protection and for exterior wall usage were selected. Custom made microcapsules containing oils or corrosion inhibitors, of various diameters and various shell compositions were added to those paints in different concentrations. The self healing process has been followed by visual inspection and accelerated corrosion tests. Strong dependencies and limitations were pointed out : concentrations of capsules, nature of the core, diameter and type of paints. The challenge is to find to appropriate microcapsules to embed in the paint.Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=7590
