This paper explains synthesis, properties and applications of waterborne acrylic emulsions. The composition and the fundamental qualities of each monomer have been discussed. The synthesis of acrylic copolymers was discussed to possess advantages of the acrylic monomer. Waterborne acrylic resin modification has received a lot of interest depending on the requirements for various resin qualities. The acrylic emulsion based coatings provide fire retardant properties, antibacterial properties, thermal stability properties, antifouling properties, multi-functional coating with high chemical and corrosion resistance properties. The application of waterborne acrylic emulsion resins in the field of construction industry, automobile industry, anticorrosive coating, wooden furniture and exterior coatings usually applied as coatings on bridges, ships and locomotives and other applications are discussed with detailed examples. |
