With the help of machine learning (ML), the experimental design, formulation, and testing of chemicals can made significantly more efficient in both time and resource efficiency. On possible application is to create a desired color code using different pigment pastes while producing the smallest possible number of samples. With a smaller number of tests, the new method presented leads to a more accurate prediction when compared to a classic experimental design plan. Surfaces (Physique)Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : A manual scratch test to measure the scratch resistance of coatings applied to a certain substrate is usually used to test the adhesion of a coating. Despite its significant amount of subjectivity, the crosscut test is widely considered to be the most practical measuring method for adhesion strength with a good reliability. Intelligent software tools help to improve and optimize systems combining chemistry, engineering based on high-throughput formulation screening (HTFS) technologies and machine learning algorithms to open up novel solutions in material sciences. Nevertheless, automated testing often misses the link to quality control by the human eye that is sensitive in spotting and evaluating defects as it is the case in the crosscut test. In this paper, we present a method for the automated and objective characterization of coatings to drive and support Chemistry 4.0 solutions via semantic image segmentation using deep convolutional networks. The algorithm evaluated the adhesion strength based on the images of the crosscuts recognizing the delaminated area and the results were compared with the traditional classification rated by the human expert. Lasers -- Applications industrielles

ThermodurcissablesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Near-infrared (NIR) laser sources (800–1000 nm) can potentially reduce the processing time for curing by a fast heating and incorporation of NIR absorbers into the coating. The latter converts NIR laser light absorbed into thermal energy. This curing technique was successfully applied to one-component thermoset coatings based on blocked polyisocyanate/hydroxy-polyester and melamine formaldehyde/hydroxy-acrylate resins with heptamethine cyanines as near-infrared absorbing material. The laser curing was additionally compared with LED sources. In general, the curing time significantly decreases in comparison with traditional heat sources. Furthermore, the photopolymerization of acrylates or epoxides can be induced simultaneously by adding suitable initiators due to photochemical generation of radicals and cations. Curing of the thermoset resin system and the photopolymerization process created interpenetrating networks. Principally, the techniques reported based on photonic NIR sources may help to substitute oven techniques where thermal activation of curing reactions is typically induced by oven or heating with infrared radiators for coating applications.
