This article focuses on the definition, mechanism of action, synthesis, effect in the final paint formulation and market review of HASE Emulsion polymer.
Hydrophobically modified alkali soluble polymer emulsions are important class of rheology modifiers for waterborne coatings. Hydrophobically modified water-soluble polymers, used by latex paint manufacturers as associative thickeners, provide significant advantages in improving film build and leveling, and decreasing spatter from roller-applied paints. Preparation method of HASE thickeners contains number of monomers ethyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, associative macro monomer, crosslinking monomer etc. Rheological behaviour of thickener solution depends on number of factors like molecular weight of polymer chain, amount of crosslinking agent used in polymerisation, acid monomer quantity used, and concentration of associative macro monomer. Generally Redox polymerisation is preferable to achieve higher molecular weight polymer. |
