Four common film-forming materials, including polyurethane (PU), polyacrylate(PA), nitrocellulose lacquer (NC) and protein, were used to coat leather. The flammability of the leather was evaluated by the vertical flame test (ALCA Method E 50) and oxygen index (OI) test method (ASTM D 2863-77). The results indicate that all of the above film-forming materials can enhance the flame-resistance of the leather. According to the OI values of the finished leathers the performance of film-forming materials on leather can be ranked as : PU>Protein>PA>NC. The results of flammability tests show that pigmented finishes may improve the flame-resistance of the leather. The effect of different application levels of film-forming materials on the flammability was examined. The results indicate that the OI values decreased with the increasing levels of PA and PU, and the other values, i.e. afterglow, after-flame, char length and weight loss, etc. rose. The variance of PU was larger than for PA.
The afterglow and after-flame of the leather, finished with a 'Sofa Leather Finishing Formula' (Clariant Chemicals Ltd, China), were much higher than for the crust indicating that the flame-resistance of this finished leather is worse than the crust. |
