Solutions aqueuses (chimie)Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Bacterial contamination on the outer grained hide of cattle serves as a significant challenge to the meat and bide processing plants regarding food safety. Cattle serves as a host to several bacteria including pathogens, which may become firmly lodged on a cattle's bide during their lifespan and can facilitate cross contamination of the underlying meat and meat processing equipment in a slaughterhouse. In this study, the efficacy of sodium dichloroisocyanurate dehydrate (SDCIC), which belongs to N-halamine group of compounds is evaluated on inhibition of the natural-borne bacteria from the haired surface of cattle bide. Spray-washing with 0.25%, 0.50% and 0.75 % aqueous SDCIC solutions reduced total aerobic bacteria on hide surface by 1.6 and 2.37 and 3.57 log CFU/50 cm'respectively in 5 min. Similarly, in comparison with water spray, a 5 min treatment with 0.25, 0.50 and 0.75 % SDCIC resulted in a reduction of Enterobacteriaceae (ENT) and related gram-negative bacilli (gnEB) counts by 1.2, 2.22 and 4.22 log CFU/50 cm' respectively. The highest reduction of E. coli recovery of 1.48 log CFU/50 cm2 was obtained with a spray treatment of 0.75 % SDCIC in 1 minute. Likewise, 0.75 % SDCIC spray treatment resulted in 2.5 and 3.65 log CFU/50 cm2 reduction of Salmonella in 1 and 5 min, respectively in comparison to their respective controls. Leather from treated hides was tested to evaluate the effects of N-halamine solutions on structural, mechanical and subjective properties of produced leather in which no major detrimental impacts were found. Produits de conservation du cuirIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The traditional wet salting technique of bovine hide curing requires 95% or more saturated brine solution which generates a huge amount of pollution and salinity in the form of total dissolved solids (TDS) and chlorides (Cl-) during leather processing. Therefore, much attention is currently placed on tanneries requiring reduction or eliminate the use of sodium chloride as a raw hide/skin preservative. For the preservation of hide it is essential to arrest microbial attack as the collagen-breaking enzymes called collagenase produced by the bacteria can cause serious degradation on hide which leads to the putrefaction of raw hide before converting them into leather. In this research effort, a number of formulas have been developed and evaluated for their efficacy in preserving bovine hide for 30 days or more. This attempt has been made to evolve a least chloride containing curing system for salinity abatement, where 35% saturated brine is used as the base solution. The developed formulations have been evaluated with better efficacy than the conventional technique on limiting bacterial growth, controlling yeast and mold during the storage period of cured hide. The alternative methods also offer quick rehydration of cured hide during leather processing and Airborne Ultrasonic scanning detects no detrimental impact on alternatively cured hides. Therefore, this new development is ideally suited for hide preservation through better protection of hide from microbial degradation and improved conservation of environment in compare to the traditional method. Tests d'efficacitéIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Bovine raw hides are commercially cured either with high salt concentration of about half the weight of actual hide or 95% saturated brine solution. This conventional technique is very popular due to the availability of common salt (sodium chloride) and its cost-effective procedure but it generates a huge pollution problem increasing salinity. As a result, an alternative method of using less or no salt for hide preservation needs to be developed. For the preservation of hide it is essential to arrest microbial attack on hide as the main constituent of raw hide is protein which is very susceptible for bacterial degradation. Such bacterial degradation leads to the putrefaction of raw hide before converting them into leather. Agricultural Research Services scientists at Wyndmoor, Pennsylvania, have developed antiseptic based formulations for hide curing where only 45% saturated brine solution is used. The newly developed formulations have been found more effective in limiting microbial growth for a longer time on cured skin than the regular brine process and thus preserve hides for more than 30 days. In-process analysis of cured hides during storage period reveals the compatibility of the alternative curing process in comparison to the traditional method. Therefore, this new development will not only preserve hide through better protection from microorganisms but also offers improved conservation of the environment. Pollution -- Lutte contreIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The traditional method for bovine hide preservation requires approximately 40-50% sodium chloride on raw hide weight or 95% saturated brine solution in case of wet salting. This salt resides in wastewater after the soaking process and generates a huge environmental pollution in the form of total dissolved solids (TDS) and chlorides (Cl-) during leather processing. The current research has developed antiseptic based hide curing formulation using 45% saturated brine solution which reduces 50% salt usage in compare to traditional method. The newly developed formulations have been found more effective in limiting microbial growth on cured hide than the conventional method preserving the bovine hide for more than 30 days. In this study, post-leather analysis e.g. grain pattern, scanning electron microscopic images, mechanical properties and organoleptic evaluation reveal that the crust leather produced from alternatively cured hides are comparable to the control obtained from traditionally preserved hide. The efficacy of the alternative system is also assessed by monitoring the environmental impacts caused by the leather processing effluents on the basis of TDS and chloride content, total solids (TS), total aerobic bacterial counts in soaking liquor, Bio-Chemical oxygen demand (BOD) and Chemical oxygen demand (COD). The environmental advantages of the alternative hide curing method are determined particularly by 50% reduction of TDS and chloride content. Therefore, this new method is feasible and industrially preferable to the traditional hide curing process.
