Fourier transform infrared studies were done to characterize the pigment. The magnesium alloy ZM 21 was coated with polyaniline-pigmented paint, based on an epoxy binder, and the corrosion performance of the coating was studied by potential measurements and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy in 0.1% and 0.5% NaCl solutions. The results were compared with strontium chromate and filler material-pigmented coatings. It was found that the coating containing polyaniline provided similar protection for the magnesium alloy as that offered by chromate-pigmented paint. However the cost of the imported raw materials make them for selective use in controlling marine and industrial corrosion of steel structures. In this present study an attempt is made to develop a coating material with good weather resistance as well as corrosion resistance. An epoxy resin cured with different ratios of aliphatic polyisocyanate was evaluated for its weather and corrosion resistance nature by conventional methods. The developed resin system was used to formulate a paint i.e. top coat and its performance was compared with the conventional epoxy polyamide paint and a conventional polyurethane paint. It was concluded that by reacting epoxy resin with aliphatic isocyanate one can get a cost effective, better performing top coat, which can be a good replacement for conventional aliphatic polyurethane topcoats.
