Currently, Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) stabilized polyvinyl acetate (PVAc) is widely used as white glue. The main drawback of PVAc is its weak performance towards hum id conditions and elevated temperatures. These drawbacks limit the usage of PVAc in the applications where high performance is required in humid conditions and at elevated temperatures. In order to overcome these PVAc disadvantages numerous studies on PVAc adhesives modification, by adding fillers, were carried out over the last few years. Filler can be organic or inorganic materials. Fillers can be used to boost the performance of wood adhesives. By using nano-fillers, due to a small size and large surface area of the particles, only small amounts are needed to make significant changes in wood adhesive performance. Fillers limit penetration of the adhesive into porous substrates. For rheology modification, fillers with high oil absorption can raise the dispersion viscosity, markedly. Filler is seen as a high-performance additive, not just for cost-lowering dilutants, but also possessing functional effects such as reinforcement, flame retardant, density control and antiblock. Here we reviewed different fillers used in PVAc emulsion-based wood adhesive to enhance its thermal and performance properties. |
