Coating industry is currently in need of renewable resources and cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL) has been found to be ranked as an efficient bio-based resource to make polymers and resins. CNSL based resins and polymers have been extensively studied for their application in the field of protective coatings, which can help to improve the anti-corrosion, anti-fungal and anti- bacterial properties of coatings. The CNSL chemical structure offers pathways for a number of polymerization reactions owing to its reactive phenolic structure and meta-substituted unsaturated aliphatic chain. To add on to the inherent unique properties, CNSL is also cheap and easily available and thus is an economical and bio-friendly sustainable resource. The long aliphatic chain in the structure of CNSL is known to impart excellent and-corrosion, water resistance and flexibility to coatings. The present review paper mainly focuses the anti-corrosion properties of CNSL based coatings. |
