Résumé : |
The thermal and mechanical properties of an epoxy resin are derived from the structure and chemistry of its cross-linked network. Dynamic mechanical analysis can be used to measure transition temperatures of epoxies, including the primary transition : the glass transition temperature. Secondary transitions can provide additional insights into the structure property of epoxies. |

- Materials and methods
- Thermomechanical evaluation of an epoxy
- Epoxy transition temperatures measured by DMA
- Effect of temperature on primary and secondary transitions
- Reversible solvent absorption
- Table 1 : Some commercially available epoxies tested (purchased at online retailer in pre-packaged cartridges or small bottle products)
- Fig. 1 : Thermomechanical analysis of a type A (left) and B epoxies (right). Type B epoxies have secondary transitions
- Fig. 2 : Type B epoxies have secondary transitions, which are apparent when applying peak deconvolution techniques (Igor Pro software used for data processing)
- Fig. 3 : The type A epoxy (ID5, Table 1) was mixed at different ratios to demonstrate that the primary transition changes with A:B ratio. Schematic representation of a cross-linked network, from bottome to top : excess part A (resin) to excess part B (hardener)
- Fig. 4 : A type B epoxy was exposed at different temperatures showing that the secondary transition peak eventually merges with the primary transition peak
- Fig. 5 : Epoxies of type A and type B exposed to boiling water for 1 h to evaluate if moisture absorption can be detected by DMA measurements |
