Carbon fibers (CF) are exposed to high mechanical stress within the process chain starting from fiber treatment to textile and composite production up to recycling and reuse. Splinter fractures of the fibers can produce alveolar fragments which, according to the WHO criteria (length >5 pm, diameter <3 pm, length : diameter > 3 : 1), must be assumed to have an asbestos-like effect. So far, it has not been clarified which carbon fibers are proue to this splinter fracture behavior and in which concentration fragments are released.
The aim of the CarboBreak project (Funding ID : 03XP0197A) is to gain in-depth knowledge of the fracture behavior of carbon fibers and to investigate the release of respirable fragments under mechanical stress. |
