Tannage Résumé : Valonea is one of the well-known vegetable tannins, used for tannage and retanning processes in leather making. Although it is used very extensively in the leather industry, its main components and chemical structure are only gradually being identified. In order to investigate the chemical structure of valonea with novel techniques, MALDI-TOF (Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionisation Time-of-Flight) and FTIR (Fourier Transform Infrared) Spectroscopy were used. The MALDI-TOF spectrum showed the presence of low molecular weight fraction of hydrolysable tannins such as nonahydroxytriphnoic, flavogallonic acid, ellagic and gallic acid, pentagalloylglucose and all sorts of degradation and oxidation products which are thought to be major components of valonea tannin. Moreover, castalagin/vescalagin and those added by a few residual structures/atoms, thus creating larger molecule and greater mass than castalagin/vescalagin, derived by internal rearrangements of a larger molecule constitute major components of valonea. Peaux brutes -- TrempeIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The soaking process poses the most significant bacterial threat to the raw material amongst all the beamhouse processes. In soaking various bactericides are used in order to avoid possible defects, these chemicals which are lethal to bacteria may also be harmful to the environment and human health. As an alternative to these chemical based bactericides, the possible use of ozone - which is used as an antimicrobial agent in various industries - in the leather industry is investigated. The effect of ozone applications of 5, 10 and 15 minutes per hour were investigated comparing it to the effect of a sodium dimethyl dithiocarbamide based bactericide. 15 minutes of ozone application has been found to be the most effective on bacterial growth prevention. Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : In this research, the effects of microorganisms on suede quality of double-face leather were examined. The bacterial numbers on salted sheepskin samples were found as 1.8x106-4.3x107 cfu/g on solid medium and 1.9x106-4.7x107 cfu/g on halophile medium containing 10-30% NaCl. However it was found that salted sheepskins contained 4.4x101-2.0x104 cfu/g of fungi. While 53-74% of halophilic bacteria and 39-58% of fungi showed proteolytic activity, 47-62% of halophilic bacteria and 35-54% of fungi showed lipolytic activity. It was observed that defective light stained areas on suede surface of finished double-face leathers were caused by microorganisms on salted sheepskins and that these defects correspond to 35% of the total double-face leathers amount. Consequently, it was decided that the proteolytic and lipolytic activities of microorganisms on the flesh side of the sheepskins decreased the suede quality and caused economical losses. Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Fleshing wastes from tanneries create major environmental problems. Despite their considerable fat content, these wastes do not find important usage. Their disposal is also troublesome and costly. We have investigated the possible use of this fat in the production of biodiesel (fatty acid methyl esters) by transesterification, for use as a replacement for fossil fuels. The fat was released from the waste by boiling with water under high speed grinding, dried and used without further refining for the production of fatty acid methyl esters. Evaluation of the product indicated that it was suitable for use as a biodiesel fuel. Thus, a contaminating waste can be transformed into an environmentally friendly fuel, providing economical and ecological profits.
