The significant difference between the mechanical recycling of mainly PET bottle waste and chemical recycling, which is ultimately aiming at all kind of polyester waste, are process/investment costs and process complexity or more generally the difference between manufacturing light industry and heavy industry. Within the first case, one is able to generate a result or profit with an investment between € 0.5 million and € 5 million compared to the heave industry investment of between € 20 million and € 200 million or even higher. Another hurdle of chemical recycling is the fact that investments are today still ideology driven and not market driven. As long as fossil-based polyester is competing in a free market with chemical recycling-based polyester, the latter it has no real chance of winning. The world would need a general ruling that the price of a product depends on the carbon source — fossil or recycling-loop — and all fossil-based products have to pay a recycling-loop-tax which makes fossil products automatically more expensive than recycling-loop-based products. |
