Séparation de phasesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Polymers, and even more so polymer blends, are selected for their particular properties and processing characteristics. It is often necessary to include additives in the polymer formulations, either to facilitate processing, or to extend the life of the polymeric product that is created. Colourants are additives that are principally used for aesthetic purposes. However, the addition of a colourant to a thermoplastic system can lead to unexpected and sometimes detrimental changes in the material properties of that system.
In this review, the general characteristics of polymer blends and the processes involved in manufacturing them are discussed. Additives that may be included in the formulation and the interactions that can arise among the blend components are also described. The relevance of these components and processes are then discussed in regard to blends of polycarbonate and poly(butylene-terephthalate).Note de contenu : - INTRODUCTION : Polymer blends - Additives for polymer blends and general additive use - Additive interactions in polymers blends - Interactions and reactions in composite blends

RhéologieIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Acrylic and styrene/acrylic latex binders comprising functional monomers such as acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, methacrylamide, methyl methacrylate, and hydroxyethyl methacrylate in different concentration levels were synthesised. It was shown that the extent of particle swelling and the hydroplasticisation of the alkali-swellable particles was affected by the polarity of the ‘hard’ comonomer. The effect of dissociated carboxylic groups on the increase in latex viscosity and on the lowering of its minimum film-forming temperature was much more pronounced in the case of the methyl methacrylate comonomer. The thickening of the latices with hydrophobe-modified ethylene oxide urethane (HEUR) associative thickeners was considerably affected by the hydrophobicity of the particles. Thickening with hydrophically-modified alkali-soluble emulsion (HASE) thickeners depends predominantly on the excluded volume of swollen thickener particles. The influence of the hydrophobic styrene content was negligible. Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL : Monomers - Thickeners - Standard polymerisation recipe

Revêtements antisalissures:Peinture antisalissuresIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Polyurethane coatings with different network compositions were prepared in well-defined model systems as well as commercially-available formulations. The properties, such as glass-transition temperature, hardness and surface free energy, of the model network were tuned by the choice of the ingredients. All coatings were studied with respect to their bulk properties as well as their surface properties. It was found that by the addition of a fluorinated additive, the surface free energy of the coating was lowered by approximately 15mNm−1, leaving the bulk properties intact. It was also shown that these polyurethane coatings are able to adapt their surface free energy in a reversible manner when exposed to water. The magnitude and rate of surface rearrangement is strongly dependent on the network density of the coating. The effect of coating properties on the formation of a biofilm and subsequent adhesion of diatoms was studied on a selection of the coatings used in this study, and the results obtained are discussed. Transition vitreuseIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The results of studies on the effect of introducing double bonds and siloxane segments to the polyurethaneurea chain on the properties of polyurethane and polyurethane-acrylic/styrene dispersions and coatings are presented. In order to investigate that effect a 23 factorial experiment was designed and conducted. Several properties of dispersions, coatings and films were determined, including, inter alia, particle size, stability, and MFFT (minimum film-forming temperatures) of dispersions, hardness, resistance to water and solvents, adhesion of coatings and mechanical properties, and the glass-transition temperature (Tg) of films. Properties of coatings and films subjected to additional curing were also investigated. Analysing the results of the factorial experiment helped to better understand the mutual effect of several factors on the properties of the investigated materials. ESCA (electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis) and DCA (dynamic contact angle) studies of the surface properties of the coatings were also carried out. Sol-gel, ProcédéIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The curing of wet films is the essential step in coatings technology. Coatings are applied more and more on thermally-sensitive substrate materials, and the tendency to shorten production cycles is also permanently growing. For this reason, the use of radiation curing at ambient temperatures is also increasing in coatings technology in order to meet these requirements. In this paper, radiation curing of inorganic-organic hybrid polymer coating materials is described. The synthesis of suitable precursors, the preparation of the coating material via sol-gel processing, and the curing behaviour under the influence of radiation is described. In particular, the effect of ambient pressure plasma and UV radiation as curing techniques on hybrid polymer coating materials is discussed. Note de contenu : - Hybrid polymer coating materials

Technique des plasmasIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The effect of air dielectric barrier discharge plasma treatment on the chemical structure and morphology of polypropylene (PP) film was studied using UV-VIS (ultraviolet-visible), FT-IR, (Fourier transform infrared), SEM (scanning electron microscopy) and AFM (atomic force microscopy). Polypropylene samples were printed using solvent-based gravure ink. An evaluation of the print quality criteria of the treated PP films included measurement of print density and print gloss. SEM investigated the ink laydown on the modified PP film. The results showed that after a few seconds of plasma treatment, both the surface energy and the surface roughness of the treated PP film increased. There was an increase in the absorbance at the almost-visible range, and C=C and C=O bands were found after the air discharge plasma treatment. A short plasma treatment of 15 seconds was found to bring about a dramatic increase in the print density readings, but a decrease in print gloss. The time of the air discharge plasma treatment was found to have no effect on the print density or print gloss at a high ink film thickness. The results showed that air dielectric barrier discharge plasma treatment, for a few seconds, is effective in printing and is economical for industrial use (this will be studied in detail in future work). Knowledge of the conformation of a polymer in the interface region is an important aspect in understanding the mechanism of adhesion in the composite.
Characterisation and performance evaluations of the metal-polymer protective substrates, composed of a steel plate coated with electrolytic chromium (ECCS) and surface-protected by a poly(ethyleneterephthalate) (PET) co-rolled layer, were carried out by SEM (scanning electron microscopy) and TEM (transmission electron microscopy). The chemical composition and morphology of the components that allow for good adhesion of the metal-polymer plate were studied at the interface. ATR (attenuated total reflection), FT-IR (Fourier transform-infrared) and confocal Raman spectroscopy were employed to analyse the structural changes of the PET coatings on the ECCS plates resulting from the manufacturing processes and mechanical stresses.DOI : 10.1007/BF02699615 En ligne : https://link.springer.com/content/pdf/10.1007/BF02699615.pdf Format de la ressource électronique : Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=5396

ThermodurcissablesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : A collaborative effort involving OneSteel, Akzo-Nobel, Dulux, Henkel and Chemetall has been under way since 1999 to evaluate the performance of thermosetting polyester powder-coated, continuously galvanised steel.
The results obtained at six different sites of varying atmospheric corrosivity for different exposure series are examined and practical conclusions drawn. Particular attention is paid to amorphous phosphate systems because these are the most commonly used pre-treatments in Australia. In an effort to bridge the gap between panel testing and real-life structures, the performance of primers applied to fabrication welds is also being investigated.
Results obtained are compared with recommendations made in the recently reviewed Australian Standard for thermosetting powder coatings.Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL : Substrates - Outdoor exposures - Pre-treatments - Powder coating and weld repair application - Blistering and undercut from the scribe - Fabrication welding

Revêtements:PeintureIndex. décimale : 667.2 Colorants et pigments Résumé : Colour and constitution relationships within a series of naphtholazo pigments have been established. The spectral properties of the pigments in solution correlate reasonably well with the results of optimised PPP-MO calculations, and the colouristic properties of the pigments in the solid and solution states show generally similar trends. Structure/property relationships, in terms of solvent resistance, lightfastness and thermal stability, have been established for the series of pigments in printing ink and industrial paint applications. X-ray powder diffraction studies demonstrate that the aqueous heat treatment used in the synthesis of the pigments provides enhanced crystallinity which generally leads in turn to improved colouristic and technical performance. Tension superficielleIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Normally, commercial coatings are filled with small particles in the form of pigments or fillers. The general properties of surface coating systems significantly depend on the stability of such systems, and on the interaction forces between polymer matrix and particle. The knowledge about the mechanism of these interaction forces enables us to control the lacquer properties. One of the well known physical models of colloid stability is given by the Derjaguin, Landau, Verwey and Overbeek (DLVO) Theory. In this case, it is necessary to know the electrokinetic potential of the used particles. In this paper, the authors demonstrate two new methods of measuring the electrokinetic potential of such particles: namely streaming potential measurements with a special cell and electro-osmosis.
The basic requirement to combine pigment particles with the polymer matrix is a good wetting of these particles by the polymer melt. It is possible to assess the wetting properties from a knowledge of the surface tension of both components. The method of capillary penetration was used to determine the surface tension of these particles. In this paper, the authors will discuss some parameters that should be considered for the interpretation of capillary penetration experiments.Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL : Electrokinetics - Surface tension - X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy
