Résumé : |
Water is an important medium during automotive leather processing. During the tanning process, water serves two functions; to act as a carrier (e.g. for chemicals, enzymes and dyes) and allow leather to mix in the tanning drum without damage. The processing of 1 kg of hide/skin requires between 12-37 litres of water, with the beamhouse and tanning processes using approximately 55-70% of this. The post-tanning operations use 25-45% of total water usage and 5% is utilised in the finishing operation.
Although automotive leather production is a water-intensive process, water reduction technologies (e.g. low float processing and batch¬type washing) have allowed water use to decline by 37% over the last 25 years. Furthermore, most of the water is not consumed permanently, with 94% treated and released back into the hydrological cycle (Figure 1). Reducing the water footprint of tanneries has been a fundamental focus in the pursuit of sustainable leather production. As well as discharging water, tanneries continuously look for innovative ways to reduce their water footprint by recycling and reusing their water waste. |
