Coating powders are finely divided particles of organic polymers that generally contain pigments, extenders and additives. The concept of applying an organic polymer in powder form dates back to 1950s. These powders were essentially based on thermoplastic resins and flame-sprayed on metallic substrates. AH the components used in the manufacture of the coating powders are solids and the simplest way to process is to physically blend solid resins, hardeners, pigments and other materials and grind them to a suitable particle size powder. However this material will stil) be considerably heterogenous. Other early methods to produce powder coatings were hot-melt compounding on a heated twin-roller mill or a heated sigma mixer followed by dry grinding. These methods could give marginal improvement but had low output; additionally the sigma mixers needed extensive cleanup after each batch. The next step was blending of ingredients, extrusion followed by milling/sieving to produce a powder with narrow particle size range. |
