As demand rises to improve the outdoor durability of waterborne coatings, as well as enhance surface effects, Clariant has developed addditives to meet the utmost expectations, as the author discuss.
Clariant's latest renewable-based additives are combining the demand for more natural, sustainable products with state-of-the-art performance compared to standard commercially available products. These additives will enable waterborne coating manufacturers to formulate paints with surface feels from smooth to the pleasant feel of untreated wood, with outstanding scratch resistance, high matting efficiency and improved weathering properties. Water-based coatings are increasingly popular because of their more environmentally friendly aspects compared to solvent-based coatings. To protect waterborne coatings against the adverse effects of outdoor weathering and enhance their surface effects, it is necessary to add UV stabilisers and wax type additives, which must not only be perfectly compatible with the coating resin system but alos hydrophobic. Indeed, if this is not the case, the additives can easily be extracted from the coating solely by humidity (rain or condensation). |
