To ensure the highest quality of powders such as functional fillers and extenders an accurate and reliable measurement of particle size distribution is important. Viation Industries, the UK's largest manufacturer and processor of barium sulphate functional fillers and extenders, uses a Malvern Instruments Mastersizer 2000 to analyse the particle size distribution of all its products. This has enabled the company to manufacture and measure super fine powders that previously were not commercially available. Viaton's Airwhite range is manufactured either from high whiteness, low silica, high purity natural barium sulphate or from chemically precipitated materials. Airwhite 4C, for example, is an ultrafine high-purity coated white baryted extender that is used in printing inks and surface coatings. Its maximum particle size (DV97; the boundary diameter below which 97% by volume is found) is typically 4.5 µm, but a critical parameter is also the DV50 (the boundary diameter below which 50% by volume is found), because this determines the level of gloss.Note de contenu : - Laser diffraction
