Carbon black is used in many types of coatings applications, but it's the automotive application that is the most demanding.
When developing high-colour performance automotive base-coats, the coatings formulator is still faced with long and costly dispersion times. And, the challenge of dispersing and stabilising high-colour carbon blacks is made more difficult due to changes in coatings technologies driven by environmental (VOC) concerns.
Because new waterborne technologies can reduce VOC emissions by half - verses conventional solventborne base-coats 1 - formulators in Europe and North America have been transitioning to waterborne and HAPS-free automotive base-coats. Europe is leading the shift towards environmentally friendly automotive coatings technologies, followed by North America. Japan is also making plans to move towards waterborne and this trend will find its way to other major automotive markets, such as Asia Pacific and South America.Note de contenu : - Technology shift
