Bio-based chemicals that are produced from renewable raw materials enrich the range of ingredients that can be used in fast-moving consumer goods. Their economic attractiveness is also increased by a growing supply of renewable raw materials in the global context, new developments in the field of biotechnology and the expansion of relevant production capacity. However, broad social acceptance of bio-based chemicals first requires an optimised sustainability profile that takes due account of environmental, economic and social aspects at all stages of the life cycle. Such acceptance is indispensable especially in relation to consumer products. Politics, too, and especially the European Union, has taken action to promote the widespread use of bio-based chemicals, and thus to support the dissemination of renewable raw materials. |
