The graphics arts, printing and wood coating industries have already been successful in making the transition from classic solvent-based inks and coatings to UV curing, systems, where the change in state from liquid to solid is almost instantaneous as the UV curable material is passed at high speed through a drying system.
As we move further into the 21st century, there is an ever-increasing demand for higher productivity and improved quality at reduced cost. Environmental concers also require that alternative processes be considered that use low odour, low toxicity chemistries that give no solvent emission and can be processed at high speed using more efficient lower energy systems.
Both decorative and functional UV coatings are available which can give enhanced performance over that of conventional chemistries. In addition to surface protection, their use can also extend to silicone release coatings, pressure sensitive & structural adhesives and gasketing elastomers.
New materials, such as UV powder coatings, are increase constantly emerging which can increase the scope over conventional finishing methods.Note de contenu : - Chemical variations

The new generation of hybrid inks has become available that enables high gloss in-line varnishing to be carried-out immediately following multicolour printing. These inks represent a hybrid between conventional and UV curing that utilise both drying mechanisms. The UV component of the formulation allows the ink to be sufficiently set such that a 100% UV curing over-varnish can be applied immediately.
An optimised process can give very high gloss levels almost approaching that of 100% all UV with the minimal reduction in gloss level or 'gloss-back' on final drying. Hybrid inks offer an entry-level for the smaller commercial printer to add inline varnishing to their operations at relatively low cost and provide their customers with a faster-turn around as both printing and varnishing are completed in a single pass.Note de contenu : - Drying mechanisms
