- FIGURES : 1. The new cyclo pigments are ideal for the automotive industry - 2. So-called absorption pigments, produced by iron-oxide coated mica are available in copper and russet colours - 3. pearlescent coatings are most often produced by mixing thin platelets of mica or borosilicate that have been coated with a material of high refractive index, such as titanium dioxide (as shown here), iron oxide with a resin matrix - 4. When pearlescent pigments are dry blended into pre-formulated resins, surface charge incompatibilities between the two materials can cause the pigments to separate from the resin matrix, and build up in the corona spray gun tip. When the buildup becomes unstable enough, it will eventually break off as clumps, making the coated part defective or undesirable - 5. The desired visual effect of a pearlescent coating results from the interaction of light with the TiO2 coated mica or borosilicate platelets within the coating. Parallel orientation of the platelets is key - the misalignment of the coated platelets will cause light to be reflected randomly, diminishing the pearlescent luster.
