Résumé : |
The standards for the quality and appearance of leather are becoming increasingly higher in South Africa. Automation in the shoe industry makes it necessary for the leather to have improved physical properties and maximum uniformity, at the same time, the strong influence of fashion on the shoe market calls for ever widening varieties of colour and types of leather. Conditions in the raw hide market being subject to constant fluctuation, it is only by pure chance that a tanner can obtain the proper hide material for a particular type of leather. He is often forced, therefore, to modify his formulations to produce leather that will satisfy the demands of his customer.
Until quite recently, European leather manufacturers could be divided between those who produced chrome leather and those using vegetable tannins. In the last ten years, however, this distinction has been removed, owing to the increasing popularity of chrome-vegetable combination tannage.
Combinations of chrome and vegetable tannage can be carried out in many variations with regard to both the character of the leather to be produced and the processing method, two basic types being distinguished :
(a) Leather that has undergone full chrome tannage, and is then given a light vegetable topping with 1-6 % pure tannin, and (b) Leather that has been weakly chrome-pretanned and is then strongly vegetable-retanned with about 8-20 pure tannin.
The second type is practically a vegetable-tanned leather that has higher resistance to wear, perspiration, and heat than purely vegetable-tanned leather. The first type is a chrome leather whose vegetable topping serves the purpose of enabling drying by the pasting method and ensuring good buffing and superior fullness. However, the object here is to retain the chrome leather character as much as possible. |
