The publication in January 2006 of the 2nd Amendment of the Dangerous Preparations Directive establishes more stringent labelling requirements of preparations (ie paints and coatings) containing chemical substances classified as being toxic for the environment. European Member States are required to make this Directive effective in their National laws by March 1, 2007. The consequence is that many paints containing specific algicides will have to carry the environmental N-symbol and corresponding Risk phrases. There are, however, alternative biocides, which will not trigger the environmental label and provide excellent fungicidal and algicidal efficacy.
