Proper selection of the polymer will determine the coating's physical and chemical properties as well as its protective capabilities. During the selection of these polymers, each systems advantages and shortcomings must be considered. For example, SB alkyd resins are often chosen in industrial coating applications because of their excellent gloss, good adhesion and wetting properties as well as excellent compatibility with other resin types. However, in many regions including North America, Western Europe and Japan, the consumption of SB alkyds has diminished as stringent environmental regulations have driven the industry towards lower VOC system.
