Résumé : |
Hides and skins are bio-based (rich in carbon and nitrogen), and left without preservation, will biodegrade in ten days. The tanning process takes a vulnerable, wet substrates and, upon drying, turns it into a material that resists physical and biochemical (from bacteria and fungi) actions. Leather is processed in a wide variety of manners that range from light treatments to heavy treatments. The chemicals used to do these treatments themselves range in biodegradability from short-term biodegradability to degradability that take hundreds or thousands of years. If a inert, non-biodegradable substance is used in the treatment of those leathers, then the leathers themselves will take a long time to biodegrade. It is important to get the terminology of the biodegradability claims correct. Publications is the past few years have confused the terms used in describing the difference between substance biodegradability and leather biodegradability. This article hopes to address this issue.
It is not appropriate to use the terms from the chem_ical industry (relating to substances) in the description of leather, and other materials, cor one main reason ; the metrics used in substance testing cannot be applied meaningfully in a leather measurement because leather is not a substance - it is a composite of substances. |
