Overheat in buildings can be avoided by selecting an appropriate façade coating, which will reflect the sun's radiation. This is necessary in order to decrease the energy consumption of buildings. For a few years now a new generation of 'cool coatings' exist, with the particularity that they reflect the sunlight in the near infrared range (NIR) of the solar spectrum. Therefore, providing coatings with identical colours but that will lead to different surface temperature because of the increased reflectance in the NIR.
The solar irradiance spectrum extends from 280 to 2500nm and is composed of three sections. Ultraviolet : 280 to 400nm (5% of the solar energy emitted), visible : 400 to 700nm (43%) and near-infrared : 700 to 2500nm (52%).
High reflectance in UV will improve the durability of the coatings by reducing photochemical degradation process (chalking process for example). The major part of the solar energy is sent in the near-infrared part of the spectrum, making ot the key parameter for making 'cool coatings'.
With this new kind of coatings it is necessary to compare and quantify their ability to reflect sunlight by calculating the TSR (Total Solar Reflectance). The TSR is the percentage of solar light reflected by a surface and is calculated according to the ASTM E903 standard.Note de contenu : - Validation of the method : reflectance of a green pigment, powder and dispersed form
- Measurement of TSR of pigment in powder form, influence of the TiO2 surface treatment
- Influence of the NIR part of the spectra : green pigments + black pigments
