This a photo initiator used in UV-curing printing inks. As a result of set off, which may occur while the prints are wound, small amounts of ITX make contact with the unprinted reverse and (while the packaging is made and filled) also the food inside. This fact was discussed in detail controversially with the result that 'printing inks for food packaging' are now given particular attention by the general public, political representatives and authorities.
The regulation (EC) N°. 1935/2004 of the European Parliament and of the Council on materials and articles intended to come into contact with food requires that materials and articles, including active and intelligent materials and articles, shall be manufactured in compliance with good manufacturing practice so that, under normal or foreseeable conditions of use, they do not transfer their constituents to food in quantities which could :
- Endanger human health
- Bring about an unacceptable change in the composition of the food or
- Bring about a deterioration in the organoleptic characteristics thereof
Specific laws relating to printing inks - ie specifying limit values, assessment methods, permitted or prohibited components - have not yet been enacted. the result of this situation is that attempts are being made to apply directives of related technical areas at least partly and those printing ink manufacturers who have joined the European Printing inks Association, EuPIA have additionally commited to applying 'Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) in the production of printing inks for food packaging'.Note de contenu : - Plastic directive
