Tannage Résumé : The presence of the adsorbable organic halides (AOX) in treated Spanish tannery effluents has pushed us to investigate the source and origin of these contaminants from the tanning process. The auxiliary products containing organohalides used in the fatliquoring bath seem to be the main source of adsorbable organic halides in the wastewater. However, important concentrations of adsorbable organic halides have been found in other process wastewaters, and they are not eliminated in the physical and chemical wastewater treatments. Nevertheless, the source of these adsorbable organic halides is unknown. Thus, the main objective of this study was to carry out determinations of AOX and some other physical and chemical parameters of the wastewater generated in the tanning plant to characterise the wastewater of each process. The results reveal that the most important sources of AOX are the fatliquoring, tannage and pickling baths. Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Efforts have been made to investigate a treatment process that produces minimum effluents (i.e., environmentally friendly), and yet significantly increases the quality and heat resistance of a fibrous collagen material for the leather industry. The structural properties of collagen fibrils in chrome tanned bovine leather have been examined when chromium salts with different concentrations were applied to treat bovine skin collagen to obtain a leather product. The treated samples were dried and an X-ray diffraction study was carried out to assess the influence of chromium ion concentration on collagen fibres. Observations showed that molecular arrangement in collagen depends on concentration of chromium ions used in the tanning process. Bovine collagen treated with tanning agents at Chrome concentrations of (1,3,5,7,9,11%), resulted in changes in the molecular packing within the collagen fibrils. The shrinkage temperature of fibers cross-linked with chromium salt increases compared to the control. Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : Tannery wastewater containing high concentrations of organic and inorganic pollutants and suspended and dissolved solids was treated by anaerobic digestion in a 12.5 m3 capacity pilot scale Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (UASB) reactor. Tannery wastewater used for treatment was not diluted with domestic wastewater. The performance of the UASB system in terms of Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) and sulfate removal, gas production, methanogenic activity and the amount of solids present in the reactor was studied at different organic loading rates. The average COD removal efficiency of about 65 % was achieved and the sulfate removal was consistently above 80 %. The organic loading rate was varied between 0.2 kg/m3/d to about 7 kg/m3/d. The average gas production in the reactor was 0.3 m3/kg of COD removed. Specific methane production and methanogenic activity in the reactor increased with the increase in organic load. Sludge profile was estimated by collecting sludge samples from different heights along the reactor. The Volatile Suspended Solids (VSS) concentration in the reactor was about 200 kgs. The average VSS concentration varied between 30-60 % of the Suspended Solids (SS) concentration. Applying a modified Monad equation, the kinetic coefficients of the anaerobic digestion were determined. The calculated amount of non-biodegradable material was about 500 mg/L, which is in agreement with the experimental value. The values for yield and decay coefficients were found to be 0.16 and 0.01, respectively.
