Résumé : |
In this extensive volume, a centuries-old process is subjected to a scrutiny which is both modern and modernizing. Bringing all current knowledge together and clearing the field for future developmental research, Shrinkproofing of wool surveys, coordinates, and interprets the widely scattered literature on the felting and shrinkproofing of wool and the peculiar frictional properties of wool which are basically responsible for felting.
The author emphasizes the physics of wool as the necessary link between its technology and its chemistry. To the end of making this knowledge widely accessible, she endeavors to break down interdisciplinary barriers that have hindered mutual understanding between chemists and physicists. Wherever possible, presentations and explanations have been kept simple and free of jargon. An introductory pair of chapters has been included to explain the structure of the cuticle of the wool fiber and the properties and production of friction.
The only current work on the prevention of wool felting, Shrinkproofing of wool is mandatory reading for students and faculty in technical colleges and universities, researchers, developers, and persons in the wool industry who need to understand the processes they use in the mill. |
