In a recent SATRA survey amongst British shoe manu-facturers, the following data were obtained with respect to grain crack problems during shoemaking:
Group A: 35 % have problems of grain crack.
Group B: 39 % have grain crack problems but are prepared to accept the current level of failures. Group C: 26 % have no grain crack problems.
The incidence of grain crack failure during lasting was :
Group A: 0.1-10 % of uppers crack during lasting. Group B: 0.02-3.0 % of uppers crack during lasting. Group C: 0.01-2-0 % of uppers crack during lasting.
Group A represent the largest quantity of leather used and the factory who reported 10 % failures was one factory in a large manufacturing group.
In general it was considered that corrected grain leathers were the cause of more crack grain problems than full grain leather. It will be seen later that this is consistent with the observations that we have made in this investigation.
The traditional method of minimising grain crack problems during lasting is to add moisture to the upper by conditioning for 24-48 h or longer at about 85 relative humidity and 20°c. In mulling processes, where the whole or part (vamp) of the upper is exposed to water vapour at about 60°c for 1-20 min, up ici about 6 of moisture based upon the initial weight of the leather, may be absorbed by mulling techniques and the upper is usually lasted immediately upon removal from the steam. With these methods of adding moisture to the leather in mind, the survey showed that the incidence of grain crack is very much related to the use of some such pre-lasting treatment. |
