The aim here is to help make better leather, in particular to be able to dye it better. The difficulties in dyeing can be attributed in part to the leather, in part to the dyes, and in part to the process itself. Relevant points about dyes and about the substrate are therefore first reviewed briefly, and then the process of dyeing is considered, stress being laid particularly on the need to standardise the process as far as possible. Standardising does not mean that all leather should be the same, but that, when a particular type of leather is being produced, variations between batches and between individual pieces within batches are reduced as far as possible. |
