The colour of the leather is the most important factor for its acceptance to the customer. Leather has other important characteristics such as water vapour permeability which are difficult to demonstrate convincingly to the customer. Recent developments in dyeing have contributed considerably towards producing serviceable leather in anticipation of the changing demand of the customer. Constant efforts should be made in the future to develop dyes with improved fastness properties, in particular dry-cleaning and perspiration fastness. Developments in the manufacturing technique of leather with better hydrothermal resistance would contribute towards improvements in continuous through-put dyeing systems. All these would further improve the competitive position of leather against synthetic materials |
