Based on the colorimetric attributes of specimens, the blackness preference of samples is assessed by 18 amateur observers through different predesigned experiments. Results show that while the lightness of samples performs a very important role in the blackness preference, it does not individually influence the results, and irrespective of the effect of chroma, observers perceive bluish-cyanish black fabrics as the preferred black samples. However, the specialized functionality of lightness is evident for black coated fabrics with very close hue and chroma attributes, and the blackness preference of samples increases when lightness is decreased. Finally, the validity of some suggested blackness indices is evaluated with comparison to the visual results. Note de contenu : - BLACKNESS PERCEPTION

vision des couleursIndex. décimale : 667.3 Teinture et impression des tissus Résumé : Observer metamerism is defined as a property of a pair of spectrally different stimuli having the same colour sensation for an individual (reference) observer. Frequently, samples in this pair no longer match if the observer is changed. In this article, a linear approximation formula is developed that predicts a metameric effect caused by small changes in the observer's colour-matching functions. This approximation formula enables a general metric of observer metamerism, the observer metamerism potential, to be defined that is independent of any particular deviated observer but still provides a close link to ‘observer-metameric’ colour difference. Numerical experiments were conducted to investigate the correlation between the observer metamerism potential and the maximum of 53 metameric colour differences caused by the change from the colour-matching functions of CIE standard 10° observer to the colour-matching functions of 49 Stiles and Burch's real 10° test observers. The proposed general metric, together with a previous metric proposed by the present authors, the illuminant metamerism potential, could be taken as a quantitative measure of the performance of spectral approximation methods. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 667.3 Teinture et impression des tissus Résumé : Colorimetric matching is employed under a series of virtual illuminants to produce more controllable and equalised colour-difference results under multiple illuminants. A method based on weighted principal component analysis of different artificial lights and the weighted mean is used to create a series of virtual illuminants. The weights were selected in a manner to create the virtual illuminants that benefit from the impact of a given illuminant, while the effects of other light sources on the formation of desired illuminants were also considered. The generated virtual illuminants were implemented in a colorimetric colour-matching trial. Using this method, by choosing suitable weights for different lighting conditions, more balanced colour-difference values were presented in the data set than was expected. The advantages of the suggested method were evaluated by the matching of a collection of 135 woollen samples under different virtual illuminants. vision des couleursIndex. décimale : 667.3 Teinture et impression des tissus Résumé : Indices for describing the degree of metamerism are based on either the deviation of the spectra of a metameric pair or the colour difference of the pair under test conditions. The magnitude of illuminant metamerism is commonly evaluated by measuring the colour difference under the test illuminant. The calculated colour differences absolutely vary with the selected test illuminants, so the measured (special) index of metamerism could be considered as a test-illuminant-dependent value. The spectral-based indices of metamerism act as a single-number value, but most of them are criticised for their poor correlation with visual assessment. In this paper, a general metric is developed for evaluating the upper limit of the degree of illuminant metamerism. The suggested approach combines the advantages of general and special indices, avoiding their drawbacks at the same time. The performance of the formula is analysed in a number of numerical experiments, as well as by practical testing. Note de contenu : - Definition of Illuminant Metamerisme Potentiality

Spectroscopie de réflectanceIndex. décimale : 667.3 Teinture et impression des tissus Résumé : In this paper, the influence of spectral datasets and the method of selection of the corresponding feature vectors on the compression and reconstruction of data is scrutinised. To fulfil this aim, two different sets of reflectance data with the least spectral similarity are selected from different sets of spectral databases and the most optimal eigenvectors are chosen using different strategies. Six and 12 arrangements of eigenvectors obtained from different individual or combined databases are then used for the compression of reflectance spectra of learning sets, as well as those that have not been used in extraction of eigenvectors. The validity of the desired reduced subspaces is assessed by computing the spectral errors between the actual and the reconstructed spectra of samples of learning sets. Moreover, the efficiencies of designed compressed subspaces are evaluated through the numbers of out-of-range reconstructed spectra, as well as the spectral and colorimetric deviations between the actual and compressed-reconstructed reflectance spectra of samples of datasets that were not employed in learning sequence. The results show that in the restricted subspaces, i.e. six-dimensional subspace, the most effective results are achieved when the reduced subspace is created from a collection of two separate sets of eigenvectors of two different datasets with the maximum degree of dissimilarity, and the reduced spaces that have been made from six eigenvectors of individual datasets lead to higher errors.
